Week 1

1) Summary

In the first three chapters of the book “Against All Odds” this book gives a lot of information. In the first chapter called “Ottawa” it talks about how WWII has just ended and how there is going to be winter Olympics in Switzerland. It Talks about how men from the air force would play for the ice hockey team and how people and the media reacted to this. In the second chapter of this book which is called “The Games” it talks about when they started to build the team and get ready for the Olympics. It goes over many things like were they got all of the equipment and about how they made a system that brought players in and kept the good players and made the bad ones leave. In the third chapter of this book which is called “The Boys in Blue” it talks about when they were getting closer to having their team put together and when they started playing other teams in pre tournaments to test their team out.

2) Teacher Question & Answer

In the story Against All Odds there is a man named Sandy Watson. Sandy Watson is the man who takes over the job of creating a hockey team for team canada. Put yourself in Sandy Watsons shoes and think about how you would feel if you had this job. Think about all your responsibilities that you would have and how you would feel if you let the country down by creating a bad team as well.

Answer - If i was put in Sandy Watsons shoes i would feel very stressed. One of the reasons that i would feel this way because of all the jobs that i would have to finnish in a short period of time before the olympics begin. There is many many jobs that have to be done from getting the proposal and approval from the olympics to play in them and finding good hockey players, coaches and everything else a team needs to be successful. Another reason i would be stressed is because Canada is known for producing some of the worlds best hockey players which then means it is expected to always be one of the best teams in national events. If Sandy creates a team that fails it will make Canada look terrible and all the Canadian people will be mad at him for even trying to make a team. These are the reasons that i would feel very stressed if i was Sandy Watson.

3) Discussion Question

Question -

If you followed this past years winter olympics in PyeongChang you would have know that the NHL banned hockey players to play from the NHL. Since the NHL did this to build our olympic team they pulled hockey players from other leagues like the Russian league. But in the Olympic in Switzerland after WWII no hockey players could play that were paid to play in any hockey league.

1. What would you do if you were in charge of making a hockey team for Canada in the 1928 winter olympics but couldn't get any paid players from hockey leagues to play? Hint(Think of all the men that fought in the war)

2 .How would you figure out what players to keep and to leave out of the 1000s of players trying out for the team?

4) Collaborative Response

1. For the first question i got many ideas that actually were what they ended up doing. There were ideas about getting military people to play, Trying out kids and people who don't get paid to play hockey and also some answers that were a little out of control like taking fighter planes to the olympics and forcing the olympic people to change the rules to allow paid players to play.

2. For the second question there were ideas to get everyone that wanted to try out in one place and just file through people quickly which was somewhat what they ended up doing in the book. I then told everyone what they did end up doing and they all agreed.

Week 2

1) Summary

In the second half of part 1 of the book “Against All Odds” it talks about how they have got the team being closer to being finalized for the upcoming Olympics in Switzerland. However, they start playing some pre-tournament games and things don’t go so well. They played two teams and lost very badly. This then concerned the whole Country from the team and its managers, to the media, to the people of Canada because they would rather not have a team at all than have to go and play and get beaten badly in the Olympics. However, the team does not give up. They managed to find some more good hockey players that played very well on the same line together. These men were on hold in the air force and were easily brought back into it. The team asked them if they would like to play and they were happy to give it a try. These men helped give the team a spark to try make it better. It then went on to talk about how they got even more players and then they finally announced the composition of the flyers while there were eight days to before they sailed to Europe. But then the worst was to come. the starting goalie has a heart problem and cannot make the trip overseas. so last minute they call in a well know goalie by the name of Murray dowie. Murray was known as a great goalie but when Boucher saw him he was concerned because of how small he was. Then the story then tells us about how he was trying to survive after going through a pow camp.

2) Teacher Question & Answer

Put your selves into the life of the Flyer Goalie that won’t be able to make it to the Olympics because of heart problems. If you were him how would you feel?

I would feel cross between mad and sad. I would feel sad because the problems with my heart could affect me from doing certain things ever again like hockey. I would feel mad because I would have practiced very hard and gone through a lot to make the team. I would also be excited to get the chance to go to the Olympics and represent my country but because all of the sudden I can’t I would be very mad!

3) Discussion Question

1- How would you feel as a canadian if our national hockey team lost badly two games in a row in the pre-tournament games to a teams that should be easy to beat?
2- If you were the owner of the team what would you try and do to fix the team?
3- If you were a Canadian would you rather the team just not go at all if they aren't good?
4- How do you think you would feel as a player for this team if everyone thought the team didn't have a chance?

Alaska- try get better training for them and make them work together.

Kyle- Give them coaching tips to improve their game individually and as a team.

  • If you were a Canadian would you rather the team just not go at all if they aren't good?

Alaska – No because she doesn’t like it when people give up
