VOCABULARY Important Things to Know/Remember

Vocabulary Studies 10th Grade Honors

For vocabulary work on Sadlier, you need to remember the following: your exercises that I assign for homework online are graded, and YOU ONLY GET ONE CHANCE. Until further notice, you will be assigned the Unit exercises titled “Choose the Right Word” and “Completing the Sentence.” Other exercises will be open to you to do or not do, your preference. This said, I highly suggest that you do quadrant work (see below) and non-graded exercises in Sadlier before completing the graded exercises. Remember as well that you need to spell the words correctly in your online exercises and provide the right tense if the word is a verb.

Quadrant work—Divide your page into quadrants. In the top left, give the word, definition, and part of speech. What you do with the other three sections is up to you, but you need to fill them with ways that you’re learning vocabulary. For example, one section can be a silly sentence or rhyme, another a list of synonyms, another a root word, its meaning, and other connected words. You can draw a picture in a section or explain how you would act the word out. You can describe your silly story if you’re using a visualization technique, or you can draw a picture of your silly story to aid you (think “ostentatious”). For only one section can you put something that needs further proof. For example, if you put “flash card,” or “Quizlet,” I’m going to ask you to show me proof that you’re working in Quizlet or show me your online or hand-written flash cards. Taking a screen shot of your Quizlet work/online flash cards should suffice. Quadrant work is expected for a minimum of 10 words per 20-word unit.
