Creative Writing: My Landscape
Our first theme for ELA 30 is Canadian Landscapes. For this assignment you are going to take a close look at your landscape. Consider Sharon Butala's writing. What did you like about her writing style? What did you dislike?
For this assignment you will write/ represent your own Canadian landscape. You can choose to use any of the following formats:
- Narrative
- Poem
- Song
- Personal Journal
- Scrapbook (must include writing)
- Letter
- Autobiography
- Interview
- Any other teacher approved formats
Regardless of what writing style you choose, you must focus on the central theme (Canadian Landscapes). Make sure to discuss a landscape that is meaningful to you and describe how it has impacted who you are.
How you choose to write and represent your landscape is up to you. Consider using multiple formats for your project. Maybe you want to take a picture of the street you grew up on and write a short narrative. Perhaps you want to do a scrapbook of your city and then describe those locations through short journal entries. Please be creative and feel free to ask for my advice as you complete your project.
Grading Procedures
I will be giving you a grade for this assignment. That being said, it will not count for your final mark in this course. This activity is considered to be a practice assignment for our next creative writing piece. If you work hard on this assignment, it will help you a great deal on your next formal writing piece.

Writing Process Checklist
- Pre-writing: We will do a brainstorm activity in class to help you come up with some different ideas on what to write about.
- Choose a format: Decide what writing format you want to use for your creative writing piece. Please discuss your idea with me if you have any hesitations.
- Make a plan: Decide how you will describe your beginning and decide how you will describe its impact on your life.
- Begin writing: Consider collaborating with peers and feel free to return to the short story and poems that we read in class.
- Peer review: Our peer review date will be Sept 15th.
- Final draft: Pay attention to the feedback you received from a peer and re-visit the rubric. Make any last changes that you think are necessary before submitting your final copy for marks.

- Rough draft with evidence of peer editing (Sept 18th)
- Final copy with your name (TBD)
