Work on these discussion questions independently or in partners. Be prepared to discuss and share with the class. Remember, when we analyze literature we can never get the answer "right". Pay attention to the story and try to put yourself in the author's shoes. Think critically and do your best to answer the questions.
1. Why do you think the author wrote this story?
2. What do we learn about the author from this story?
3. Our unit theme is "Beginnings and Becoming". What happened in Julia's beginning? How did these events shape the person she became?
4. When Julia's family came to America, why were they given new names? What does that say about the culture of America at that time? How do you think this act of changing their names impacted their beginning of a new life in America?
5. On pages 7-8 Julia describes the questions she received from peers in High School. Why did these questions frustrate her? Why was she ashamed to have her family visit her school?
